Sharon Musgrave's newest CD Outflow affirms her song writing and vocal prowess as a jazzy, soulful, funk fusion
goddess.
There's a groove mix influence from jazz, dance, pop, funk, hip hop, and reggae - but the unadulterated
soul will not be denied.
The lead single, “Beautiful Music”, is a smooth jazz radio-friendly cut, with a hit of hip hop and sultry vocals
Flavours of jazz harmony dominate.
In the atmospheric dance track “Smooth Ride” a funk thread moves the
listener through the groove, while the title track “Outflow” begins with a folk, country vibe then meshes with
Musgrave's soulful style. Throughout the album, players are given plenty of room to shine as the instrumentation
and Musgrave's vocals ebb and flow together in diversity.
Players include long time friend and musician Brian Griffith on guitar (Dan Lanois, EmmyLou Harris) together with
formidable players Jay Reed (guitar) and Aidan Mason (guitar), Troy Dowding (trumpet), Toby Stewart (keys, sax),
Mathew Lima (bass) and Peter Grimmer (drums, percussion). Jahnile Musgrave Brown, Sharon's son, a young,
multi talented musician, singer, dancer and actor – contributes urban inspired rap and beat-boxing on tracks “Good
Feelings” and “Everybody Wants It”.
Self produced with partner Peter Grimmer, most of the fifteen tracks received a final touch by renowned mixing
engineer L. Stu Young, known for his work on the last two albums for Prince, as well as a long list of other quality
acts. Outflow, also includes master engineer Phil Demetro (K-OS, Drake, Danko Jones). Both Young and
Demetro are Canadian Juno award winners.
With Outflow, Sharon “Lady” Musgrave has embarked on a new musical journey, adding a more commercial
appeal to her eclectic sound. Ten tracks showcase her trademark jazzy, rhythmic soul style, now blended with an
exquisite array of latin jazz, pop adult contemporary, dance and even a middle eastern flavour with a hip hop
groove.
Five bonus tracks include dance beats by Canadian and European re-mixers with lounge, chillout, soca rub and
deep house for all her dance fans. Each accompany Lady Musgrave's distinct and pleasurable tone.
